Upcoming Convertible in India

Convertibles are a type of automobile in which the roof can retract and fold away, converting it from an enclosed to an open-air vehicle. Roofs are affixed to the body of the vehicle and are usually not detachable but the roof is hinged and folds away, either into a recess behind the rear seats or into the boot or trunk of the vehicle. The roof may operate either manually or automatically via hydraulic or electrical actuators, and the roof itself may be constructed of soft or rigid material. Convertibles are becoming quite popular in India with many luxury brands bringing in their convertible models to India.

Mahindra mini Xylo

As per a report by leading automobile magazine AutoCarIndia Mahindra is developing a smaller version of the Xylo as can be seen from these exclusive spy pictures sent in by Autocar India reader Chandra Prakash Godara. The mini Xylo which is undergoing hot weather testing in Rajasthan will be less than four-metres in length and will come with a diesel engine under 1.5-litres to qualify as a ‘small car’ to avail of a substantial 12 percent saving in excise duty. The mini Xylo uses a shortened version of the present Xylo’s body-on-frame chassis and the current 2.5 CRDe engine has been downsized as well. The engine capacity has been reduced from 2.5-litres to under 1.5-litres by eliminating one cylinder and reducing the bore and stroke. The mini Xylo will only have two rows of seats and hence a maximum seating capacity for five passengers.

The mule caught testing is a high end model with the DDAS (Digital Driver Assist System) feature. There are no steering mounted controls for audio and the rest of dashboard, from what we infer, is alike the Xylo. The previous collection of spy shots showed two small jump seats at the rear. Will that make it to the production spec model?
For the benefit of new readers, here’s a list of features we expect on the mini Xylo.
  • Some variants could be equipped with a start button
  • It could be a 5+2 seater. Jump seats fitted to the rear are strictly for children in the family.
  • A 3 pot engine producing 70hp and 160Nm of torque will be strapped to the vehicle
  • There will be no roof-mounted AC like on the normal Xylo
  • The compact Xylo stands on 205/65/R15 tires
  • Seat backs will have aircraft style trays on select variants
  • Spare tire will be mounted on the rear door
  • The tiny quarter glass behind the jump seat will make it look like a grown up Wagon R
  • Can Mahindra price the mini Xylo from 4.99 lakh rupees?

Now it seems that Hyundai India has given a roasted reply to speculators who underestimated the hatch a tad too much. Maruti Alto must be feeling feverish already as Hyundai EON’s showbiz is ultimate even before its first official glimpse in market. Hyundai EON price most likely to be in the range of Rs 2.5 lakh-Rs 2.7 lakh is garnering all the publicity for itself. However, even features of the car have joined the bandwagon of blowing trumpet now.

BMW 7 Series

The ultimate in luxury, the 7 Series exists in a dual role to not only tickle your senses when being chauffeured around in the extremely comfortable back seats, but also to give you instant exhilaration when you do choose to take control of the wheel yourself. Available in India in the extended wheelbase version which is 14cm longer than the normal 7 for more room in the back, the 7 Series comes in four variants with extremely powerful engines - the petrol 740Li, 750Li and 760Li and the diesel 730Ld.
The third generation of the 7 series was known as the E38. It lasted from the year 1995 to the year 2001. In Europe, the variants included the 725tds, 728i, 730i, 730d, 735i, 740i (4.0 and 4.4 L), 740d and 750i.
On the American continent, E38 models were sold as 740i, 740iL and 750iL. The first of those two share the same Configuration, a 4.4 L V8. The second of those, the 740iL, is basically a long wheelbase 704i – hence the L in its name. The 750iL would go on to become the flagship sedan of BMW.
The current version of the BMW 7 Series is available in two different forms – the extended wheelbase E66 or the standard wheelbase E65.

Mahindra Verito

After the split between Mahindra and French car maker Renault was made official and completed in every respect, the first smart move by the indigenous car maker was to slash the pricing of its existing Logan model. The Logan, which very quickly established itself as a safe, dependable, spacious and fuel efficient sedan, failed unfortunately to pull in heavy sales for Mahindra while its Renault alliance was alive.
With the complete ownership of its flagship entry level sedan now in its palms, Mahindra has gone ahead and revamped the styling of its Logan model, now calling it the ‘Verito’.
The new Verito retains the same strengths of the older Logan model, but has been speckled with several rugged and sporty styling elements in order to make it look a bit more exciting than its bland looking predecessor. The exterior of the Verito now flaunts ski racks and side cladding, something not seen before in an Indian sedan. A chrome spoiler and appliqué give the new Verito a nice distinctive look at the rear.
Speaking at the launch of the Verito, Mr. Rajesh Jejurikar, Chief Executive, Automotive Division, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. said “The Verito, with its unique value proposition aligns with the Mahindra DNA of offering tough, rugged and sporty vehicles. For the first time, we are using social media platforms to unveil a new product, reflecting alternative thinking. The earlier Logan will continue to get complete service and spares support from us.”

The new ‘Verito’ will continue to be powered by the same Renault engine and offer oodles of space as the older Logan model. Coming with both, a 1.5 DCi CRDi diesel engine or 1.4 MPFI petrol engine, the Verito offers an amazing 21.03 KMPL fuel efficiency.

A 510 litre boot capacity and a host of safety features like ABS, Driver Airbags, EBD and driver information systems gives the car a slight edge over its worthy competitors. The new Mahindra ‘Verito’ is competitively priced at Rs. 4.82 lakh (petrol BS3 version) & 5.62 lakh (Diesel BS3 version). The BS4 compliant version is also available for BS4 markets.
